Role of market research?
you need to know what people want, not what the company thinks that people want.
a graphic design fable from college, short version:
a paint company once made a whole range of colours in a sturdy paint for barns. nobody bought any colour other than red. the company was confused - there were so many choices! why only pick one? finally they asked a few farmers, who said that red was the easiest colour to see from across the field so they could judge distance. style or personal preference had nothing to do with it - the colour was a TOOL, not a LOOK.
market research is essential.
