We've heard anecdotal evidence and it seems there are more small dog breeds in the marketplace than previous. I need documented research that shows a gain from one year to the next. I'd appreciate any help I can get!
Seeking definitive research on market growth of small dog breeds.?
Here's a link to an article on the AKC website about registration statistics: http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?articl...
And an excerpt from that page:
"The trend in small dogs continues to be evident with increases in the following breeds over the past 10 years — Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (735%), French Bulldog (305%), Brussels Griffon (231%) and Papillon (132%). Yet, a few larger breeds have also experienced record growth including the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon (124%) and Ibizan Hound (141%)."
Here's the link for the complete registration statistics from 2005: http://www.akc.org/reg/dogreg_stats.cfm
These don't give you actual *market* statistics, but they do tell you how many dogs of each breed were registered with the American Kennel Club each year. If you want true market statistics, I'd contact the USDA (http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usdahome ), which regulates large-scale pet breeders and wholesalers (often known as puppy mills) and ask them if they know of any statistics.
Good luck!
Reply:Have you tryed akc.org? I know they have how many of each breed on their page... Unsure if they have previous years
