Do mailing lists work for market research?
I am considering opening a new business and to determine whether there is a need for such business. I was planning on sending out surveys to the families in the geographical area where the business will be. I looked into mailing lists and thay are a bit expensive, the question is: are they worth your investment? I would send out 5000 surveys, would people email the reply back if I offer an insentive (discount) and a return envelope? Has anyone done this before and worked? I am trying to get an idea from my community as to whether my business could be profitable. Thank you to everyone for your answers.
Do mailing lists work for market research?
Think of it this way, would you take time out your already busy schedule to fill out a survey that is going to maybe get you a discount if this location opens? And also if you dont even need anything that this place is going to offer than what would be the point of the discount wouldn't affect you in the first place. Not meaning to be harsh but mailing lists can really be a waste of time and money. The probabilities that you would have a majority of the people reply back are so slim, that it would be a waste of your money. Instead try hosting some type of event, or getting permission to set up a table or booth at a shopping outlet or mall and just get people to fill out your survey. This way people are forced to acknowledge you and they get automatically rewarded. Good Luck!
Reply:I would research your type of business anywhere it currently exists.
What are those companies doing in their advertsing?...get on their mailing lists so you can receive any mailers they put out. Ask for any materials they have available.
contact them as if to be a customer....ask questions, let them tell you about their services...from this you can learn what is working for them....you may even find things that havn't occurred to you yet.
Reply:It might take less money to do a focus group--advertise with flyers in local stores and wherever you can post. You can offer snacks and beverage. I would save the 5,000 mailing to announce the opening of your business!

Your opinion sort. Re Termite inspections. (market research)?
First of all i am not trying to sell you anything ,but i would like your opinion.
As you may tell from my name i am a pest controler.
I have just spent a lot of money buying a thermal imageing machine .It allows me to see termite activity through walls without cutting them open.Which gives me a clear advantage over those without one especialy on slab houses.
Where i live most companys that have them charge $550.00 for an inspection useing one.
I charge $220.00 for a standard visual inspection.
I need to recoup my costs so to try to get my costs back quickly my plan is to charge $280.00 %26amp; advertize heavyly.
My question to you is would you pay $60.00 extra for the more accurate inspection ?
Would the difference between $280.00 %26amp; $550.00 encourage you to choose me or would you think that is such a big saveing then maybe it is too cheap and not up to the standards of other companies ?
Your opinion sort. Re Termite inspections. (market research)?
I think you can charge more than $60 extra if you can make a compelling argument that the thermal imaging is vastly superior. If competitors are charging $550 then I think you can get away with charging $350. That's still way below the normal charge so you should have a good reason you charge so much less.
Reply:Sounds good to me.

What is market research analysis?
market research analysis is nothing but analyzing the data and finding out the outcome. We generally use SPSS, EXCEL and WINTEL for this purpose.
In MR you will have the data which gives some meaning so you need to analyze that to find out the result.
What is market research analysis?
this is like doing pinch salt test it is trying to find out opinion of market by contacting selected few persona from related field and concluding what percentage of people own or disown ur concept or product for ex a detergent company visit 10000 people say for ex and ask few question and based on that they categoraise the effect of their product when it comes to high end products industries and high end society is quizzed for ex launching of a car or new paper
Reply:Market Research is a systematic, objective collection and analysis of data about a particular target market, competition, and/or environment. It always incorporates some form of data collection whether it be secondary research (often referred to as desk research) or primary market research which is collected direct from a respondent.
The purpose of any market research project is to achieve an increased understanding of the subject matter. With markets throughout the world becoming increasingly more competitive, market research is now on the agenda of many organisations, whether they be large or small.
Market Research is either quantitative, qualitative, or a combination of both. Qualitative and quantitative market research methods each provide different insights into customer behaviour. Normally, research results are more useful when the two methods are combined
Quantitative market research is numerically oriented, requires significant attention to the measurement of market phenomena and often involves statistical analysis. For example, a bank might ask its customers to rate its overall service as either excellent, good, poor or very poor.
This will provide quantitative information that can be analysed statistically. The main rule with quantitative market research is that every respondent is asked the same series of questions. The approach is very structured and normally involves large numbers of interviews/questionnaires.
Perhaps the most common quantitative technique is the 'market research survey'. These are basically projects that involve the collection of data from multiple cases - such as consumers or a set of products. Quantitative market research surveys can be conducted by using post (self-completion), face-to-face (in-street or in-home), telephone, email or web techniques. The questionnaire is one of the more common tools for collecting data from a survey, but it is only one of a wide ranging set of data collection aids.
The various types of quantitative market research methodologies are summarised below:
Face-to-Face Interviewing
either in the street or, for more complex projects, in people's homes.
Telephone Interviewing
a quick and cost effective way of achieving data.
Postal and Self-Completion Market Research
cheap but takes a relatively long time to collect data.
Omnibus Market Research Surveys
useful when only a few questions need to be asked. Questions are attached to other larger surveys. Data is obtained at a low cost.

What brands come to mind? Mark the first response. The first brand is important because it is 'most top of mind'. Report % top of mind. Report % total mentions.
Which brand do you purchase most often? Why?
Do you buy petrol from any others? Who?
Are there any brands that you would not consider purchasing? Why? (low quality, I don't like the stations, etc.)
Where was the last place that you purchased petrol? This question is behavioral. Why did you select this brand? (on the way, close by when i notice is was low, near my home, near my work, etc.)
Reply:How often they fill their tanks?
If they fill their tank full at once?
If they have a choice of brand when they want to full their tank?
Do the mind the brand if they just going to buy a little amount of gas?
Do they have any automatic recognition system in their car, if so which brand is it from?

The market environment includes the type and location of customers and the competition. You want to know who is searching for the product, what key words they are likely to use, what the competitor positions are and what their web presence is like.
A Market Research Field operative.....?
..was standing in a supermarket by the shelf holding various oil and water based "lubricants". Whenever somebody selected a product, either his own or a competing brand, he would ask a few questions, one of which was "what do you use this product for?"
He got some red-face and far-fetched answers:
"I've found this is very good for oiling my bicycle chain".
"It buff's up my leather sofa very nicely"
"It's a good selant on a leaky window until I get around to proper repairs".
until:
"Oh we use it during sex"
"Really? Would you mind giving a few more details?"
"Sure - we smear it all over the bedroom door-handle top stop our four-year-old from creeping in on us in the middle of the night."

If you do not check a company before entering into a transaction, you could lose your money, time and credibility. Some widely used resources are the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) and the national fraud center (www.fraud.org) these days, you can easily find out more about a company using the internet in a few minutes. From a company's website, you can details about its ownership, how old the company really is and feedback from the company's customers.

What's the size of the CAFM market in the UK?
I'm conducting a bit of research into this and can't find anything on the net apart from market research reports that cost a lot, and more than it's worth me investing into this project. Thanks!
CAFM is Computer Aided Facilities Management btw
What's the size of the CAFM market in the UK?
Hello,
I am doing similar research in the USA. What I've learned is that I must do most of my research via interviewing Facility Managers and reading old articles in the library. I've also found a series of books called Computer Aided facilities Planning on Amazon.com but have not purchased them yet. I do not feel it is worth the 169. US dollars to purchase. If it helps, we can communicate what we find through combined research.

Marketing research - how valuable it is ? advantages and disadvantages of Market research?
Market research is a most valuable data. U must do it. Its another information u needed to know to take appropriate decisions.
By the way do u know Colgate has research on things like this
10 Would wash your brush before u put paste
12 would u wash ur mouth before brushing or not
13 would u brush with a tooth brush or by hand
14 would u press the toothpaste at the bottom or near the mouth
Do u Know this condom company has this survey
1) would u roll the condom or roll over bear hands before a condom is rolled over
2) would u like the condom rolled over by you or ur partner
3) How many times in a week u have sex and how many times u use condoms
4) What do u do the condom after its use?
5) Is ur partner like the condom or not?
Watch a condom T.V Commercial u know the answers. That is Market research.
Did U not see the commercial where in a young girl sitting in bike biting her boyfriends ear and a woman in car showing her face as satisfied as never before then the condom brand flashes in the screen that ur partner love to have sex with u and like u using condoms. Its research buddy. Think Think
Marketing research - how valuable it is ? advantages and disadvantages of Market research?
Its very hard to explain here. But I can suggest a good book for it just read that chapter in it. Book name is Principles of Marketing Management by Philip Kotler and Armstrong. Just read market research chapter i m sure u will get answers for all ur questiones.
Reply:It is VERY valuable, especially if you have time and knowledge to interpret data.
Advantages: you get to know your market, your customers, your competitors.
Disadvantages: cost, time to get it done and methodologies (not quite perfect).

My research of market focusing on small things. need your help!?
Hi. I guess at this forum I could meet people from all over the world who speak English. I would appreciate it a lot if you could give me some information, your refresh information.
I am on a research for market of small things applied for household use. I heard there is retail market, or even supermarket, that are focusing on small things, like children toy, plastic product for home usage, basic cooker, ....
As far as I know, in Finland, there is one retailer called " Antila" . I learnt it when I was a student in Finland.
I also heard that in New Zealand, there is one called " 1.2.and 8" as the name of a retailer. But I am not very sure about it since I have never been to New Zeanland.
Do you have the related information from your own country?
I would appreciate it a lot if you could share it with me.
My research of market focusing on small things. need your help!?
There are hundreds of retailers that sell those things in England. Every supermarket I know of, from the big ones to the little high street ones sell small children's toys and plastic cooking utensils etc. Look up Asda, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Waitrose, Co-op and Iceland on the Internet - they should give you some ideas!

Are they using Y!Answers for market research now (see featured question from producers of 'Lost') ?
the producers of passions should follow their example, but that could be a major hurdle considering the fact nobody watches passions
Are they using Y!Answers for market research now (see featured question from producers of 'Lost') ?
Probably so. The show gets good ratings. I don't know why they need to market the show.
Reply:Actually, it's been going on since day one. Sometimes the stuff shows up in harmless, "Coke or Pepsi?" types of questions in Polls and Surveys, and sometimes it gets more detailed, to the point that people want you dropping brand names....
There isn't a whole lot we can do for the Official Paid-For crap that Yahoo puts up in Featured Spammers--ahem, Featured Questions now. Even asking an honest Question about it will likely get you Violated and get a *lot* of points yanked from you for it....if that weren't the case I'd *already* be asking:
"So...why *does* UNICEF and it's paid-for celebrities get a *free ride* when it comes to SPAMMING Yahoo Answers?"
But no, we're just *peons* here. Yahoo doesn't want anyone questioning the dictatorship here. So the Shills and Scammers and "....abc.com" botnet sites still get free reign....
It sucks, and people *refuse* to fix anything around here until and unless a Paid-For Troll wants it. It is why I am going to quit at Level 6, really, there's nothing left for me to do here, and it isn't that far away.
Just my two cents. Never mind me, I'm just a *peon* here.

Please Help!! Market research!!?
I need to know the different ways of collecting information from the public!! For example: Surveys. Thanks!!
Please Help!! Market research!!?
You can do survey both online sitting home only and offline.
You can simply join three four social networking sites like Facebook,Hi5,Friendster and then you can simply start a post and you will easily get the answers .
Also if you some amount of money than you can a prepare form of questionire and you can launch a microsite of your own and promote it through SEO,
You can also send your questionaire in a form of newsletter but you will be charged for this.
In offline you can simply put a stall in shopping malls and you can organise a small contest in which customer will get some gift in return of filling your questionire
Reply:A mail, email or telephone survey works best, because you can then target specific groups of people to receive it to ensure you get a valid cross-section of people. If you simply set up a kiosk or online survey for people who happen to find it, you will get info but it may not be as reliable, because you may not get enough people to respond say from a certain age group.
Another common way for companies to get information is to purchase what is already out there. When people respond to surveys on warranty cards, such as those that ask about your interests, those reponses are stored in databases. As a marketer, I can purchase a list of people who live in a certain geographic area, have a certain kind of credit card, are likely to practice a certain religion and who eat out three times a week. That may seem like a silly example, but I'm just making a point that a wealth of information can be purchased.
Reply:The best way is stopping People in the High Street. Another way is when you buy electical goods from Comets etc you sometimes get a survey questionare with it. Or going round residential Houses or via phone calls but People tend to not like that way of doing it.

3.) Justclubin.com - "If you can't find it here, it's not open"
4.) Justclubin.com - "making your night out just a click away"
5.) Justclubin.com - "we're the answer to; Where's the party at?"

Reply:I would vote for #1, #4 or #5. The reason? They give people a better idea of what your site is about. The #2 and #3 could be about anything hot or anything open -- such as the local IHOP.
If you used #4 or #5, I might tighten the wording up a little so it flows better and is easier to remember.
For #4, I'd suggest: Your Night Out's Just a Click Away or Your Night Out. . .Just a Click Away.
For #5, I'd suggest: Your Answer to "Where's the Party?"

Definition of capital market research?
Finding information of money markets - ie, inter-bank rates, interest rates, foreign exchange rates, trade balance of payments etc. This also includes transactions such as swops, futures, contracts, hedging.
What is the role of marketing research in decision making?
Market research is one of the important pieces information in many product decisions. For example if a company is looking at building cars they will want to do market research to determine what features are popular and what their value is to the consumer to determine if they can produce those features and make money doing it as well. They will also want to know what colors they should paint the car. Other decisions such as how to route the fuel lines will not require market research.
What is the role of marketing research in decision making?
Quite a huge role, actually. From conception to execution, market research tells you what will work and what won't. You need market research for your feasibility study, you need it to determine who your target market is, what they need, what they want in a product, etc. I'd say 70% of the time in business (which involves a huge deal of decision making), you use market research to back your decision up, the rest may be from gut feel or from experience.

Who are the national and local market leaders in jewellery (UK)?
I'm doing research for Business Studies, and I'm struggling with finding secondary market research to determine:
- what the main market trends are for jewellery (growing or shrinking);
- who are the national and local market leaders in jewellery;
- who the main market segments are in jewellery;
(In the UK)
Thanks very much. :)
Who are the national and local market leaders in jewellery (UK)?
Probably Signet group who owns H Samuels, and provide the full range of bling. The quality market (how you define that is anybody's guess) is supposedly led by Goldsmiths.
You should be able to find plenty on line about the business - you may also need to consider that many of the sales are on-line now and reflect on how that will affect the traditional market operation.

Reply:THE FIRST INVESTORS
By obvious logical deduction one can assuredly realize that the first investors of civilization did not use the medium of money. There was no money in early civilizations - - - time and physical effort were the initial investments. One or more persons physically worked to clear away land, either for living quarters, holding domesticated breeding animals, or for agricultural purposes.
--------------------------------------...
THE PARTNERSHIP
Partnership was most probably the initial form of joint investments - - - starting within the family unit and/or tribal groups of prehistoric peoples. They had to work cooperatively for mutual benefits, security, and survival. Even in protecting themselves from the environment and other hazards at the time, group participation was essential.
--------------------------------------...
LEADERSHIP
Leadership, - - - the next step in social evolution. Above all, there always had to be a leader. The strongest, the more daring, and the cleverest was the leader, a chief to lead and organize the group. Here we have our first C E O. Members of the group either submitted to the leader's wishes (THE INVESTMENT) through fear or expectation of rewards (THE DIVIDEND) from the leader for services rendered.
--------------------------------------...
THE STOCKHOLDERS
Everyone shared in the kill, i.e., the members of the tribe or family unit who participated (THE STOCKHOLDERS). Certain rights and privileges were granted to those who supported (INVESTED) in the leader. From the tribes and feudalistic groupings of peoples evolved the initial forms of government. Most of the members of society invested through loyalty and service to their group for the mutual benefit of all. Step by step society advanced, and without realizing it, through investing in each other succeeded towards a civilization.
--------------------------------------...
MONOPOLIES BEFORE PEOPLE WERE GRANTED
FREEDOM AND FREE ENTERPRISE
Investment opportunities were not always available to the average person. As royalty and imperial forms of government evolved, special monopolies and privileges were granted to certain individuals or groups. In the sixteen hundreds massive parcels of land control were granted to favored subjects of the King of England. King James I in 1606 divided the east coast of North America between The London Company and the Plymouth Company.
--------------------------------------...
THE EAST INDIA COMPANY
In the late 1500's the King of England granted certain rights to Sir Thomas Smythe, a wealthy entrepreneur who was the first Governor of the East India Company. The company was composed of a number of very rich stockholders. Silver, gold and bartering of commodities was the main media of value exchanged at the time.
--------------------------------------...
AFTER THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
The open market and free enterprise as we know it to be today had its beginnings after the American Revolution. Without the American people winning the right to self government and freedom, the world's economy as we know it today could not have come to be. The founding fathers of the United States laid the foundation upon which the future progress of the world's economy rests. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States laid the foundation for a modern humane civilization.
--------------------------------------...
CHAPTER TWO
IN THE BEGINNING
--------------------------------------...
It was in 1791, under a buttonwood tree at the base of Manhattan, where the beginnings of the now New York Stock Exchange started. Forty years prior, merchants and brokers gathered under a tile roof in lower Manhattan to auction off a wide variety of commodities. During these initial 40 years the group was known as "The Royal Exchange". They primarily traded in wheat, tobacco, cotton, sugar, and sometimes even in slaves. Selling of shares of stock of a company was not common in those days as there were few businesses worthy of public investments in the Colonies at the time.
--------------------------------------...
AMERICA'S FEDERAL DEBT
In 1790, however, the Federal Government declared that it was redeeming the SCRIP MONEY that was issued during the Revolutionary War in the amount of $80,000,000 dollars. SCRIPT was the promissory notes that were issued to the soldiers and the firms and merchants that supplied the military with food and equipment during the war. As a result of this Federal action, these certificates created by the U.S. Government became the first stock certificates traded in America.
--------------------------------------...
AMERICA'S FIRST BANK
About this time, the Government announced the creation of the first bank of the United States in conjunction with the sale of $10,000,000 dollars in shares of stock. Gradually other securities were also issued in connection with the Federal Debt. Subsequently, new additional shares were issued in establishing The Bank of New York. Immediately, public interest in stocks and bonds trading ensued.
--------------------------------------...
FROM ONCE A DAY TRADING,
TO TWICE A DAY TRADING,
TO CONTINUOUS ALL DAY TRADING
Auctions were held once daily. As substantial sales activities increased, it was decided by the group to hold sales twice daily to cover the demand on the market. Many years later, after the Civil War, a continuous all day system of trading was started. From 1790 on, a significant change came about, with some commodities dealers and auctioneers beginning to sell stocks and bonds as a side line. It was rapidly realized that selling stocks and bonds required full time brokering in these securities that proved profitable.
--------------------------------------...
ORGANIZERS OF THE
EXCLUSIONARY TRADING GROUP
On May 17th, 1792 twenty-four broker/auctioneers met under the famous BUTTONWOOD TREE on Wall Street, where they had been already transacting business for about a year or so. At this location they established a trading group that was an exclusionary trading organization. These twenty-four individuals started what was to eventually evolve into The New York Stock Exchange.
--------------------------------------...
"THE BUTTONWOOD AGREEMENT"
A mutual beneficial agreement was created by these broker/auctioneers, called "THE BUTTONWOOD AGREEMENT", as follows:
"We the subscribers, brokers for the purchase and sale of public stock do hereby solemnly promise and pledge ourselves to each other, that we will not buy or sell from this day on for any persons whatsoever any kind of public stock at a less rate than one-quarter percent commission on the specie value of, and that we will give preference to each other in our negotiations."
--------------------------------------...
THE TONTINE COFFEE HOUSE ON WALL STREET
In the following year the group moved to a private room in the Tontine Coffee House on Wall Street to conduct its business. With no management structure, this very simple organization began its operations, without even a formal name. With hardly a noticeable overhead, or even an official name, the organization grew in leaps and bounds, into today's modern computerized financial center of the world.
--------------------------------------...
CIRCUMVENTION OF THE LAW
It is interesting to note that the initial organization was created to circumvent the law, a law that outlawed public stock auctions. The initial group transformed what had been public transactions into private transactions by their so-called private organization. This was a form of capitalism for the few - - - the insiders.
--------------------------------------...
THE WAR OF 1812
The War of June 18th, 1812 with England was called THE SECOND WAR FOR INDEPENDENCE. In the same year, America ultimately failed in its invasion of Canada. As a result of this War effort, the U.S. Government debt incurred was increased and excited greater market activity in certificate trading. In addition, the development and establishment of forty new banks in the United States greatly affected Wall Street. Venture capital was required to fund these new banking enterprises. Wall Street eagerly provided the means of raising the much needed capital through the sale of securities.
At this time Wall Street operations were becoming more and more lucrative and attracted many individuals as a source of earning big money.

We use to do a thing in school were you had to run and market a busness and also one where you had to buy and monitor stocks. The one thing that may be good is to split them into research groups and have them develop and market a product to another class. have the other class and maybe a few teachers select the best product and have a little prize.

Effective lesson plans for business studies. topic on market research for aged group 14 - 16?
It appears that the question period has expired. If you have received an answer that meets your needs, please choose one of those as a 'best answer.' If you haven't received a good answer for your question, you may want to consider the following,
1) Re-post your question. Newer questions get more activity on Yahoo! Answers than old ones.
2) If you do re-post your question, consider why it wasn't answered the first time. Could it be more specific? Could it be worded better? Were there grammatical or spelling errors? Was it in the best category?
If it doesn't seem likely that re-posting your question will help you, then here's a listing of my favorite 'answer sites'. Maybe one of them will help you.

How do i find info. on the apparel (underwear) market?
I am trying to find what company owns what percentage of the market, who my biggest competitors would be if I start a underwear and a mens clothing line...
I keep finding reports you have to pay thousands for. I can't afford that, anyone know how to do the research for a business plan when it comes to market research? hhheeelp!
How do i find info. on the apparel (underwear) market?
Actually, you should hit the streets. You need to check out who is selling in the stores you would like to be in. Just by walking in the store and looking at your competitors brands, you can then see their average price, where they are located in the store, what percentage of cotton, silk and polyester they are made of. Consider buying a couple samples to take home for detailed reference.
Then, once you have the name of the company, go to Yahoo Stocks and search for the stock symbol of that company. When you find it, pull their SEC filing (which will be listed on their finance page), and their annual reports. You will see exact sales numbers for the past several years, and it's free to see. If the website tries to charge you a fee, you can pull the reports for free from the companies websites.
Once you have that info, you can list it in your business plan, then name a sales goal for your products based on a reasonable percentage. (Reasonable might be capturing 1% of your competitors market in the first ten years.)
Hope this helps.
Reply:I think I can help you, cuz. I own a garment factories in china, and I living in Hong Kong. And I also have experience to import to Australia. And I have the same think to make the underwear instead of the borading solid color style as now, I have a good idea at this way, if you are interesting we should talking more by the email, lenxis@gmail.com

In the market for an Mp3 player?
I still firmly believe that the iPod is just something that trendy people (sheeple) buy because the next man has it. However I did do some marketing research and I've seen that the iPod is pretty solid in some aspects. My question is: is it worth it? If so, what's a good model, if it's not than what is another good mp3 player for several gigs of music?
In the market for an Mp3 player?
According to www.ConsumerResearch.com:
Best MP3 player overall.
The iPod nano tops virtually all other MP3 players when it comes to sound quality and ease of use. The latest nano has a new aluminum shell that's more scratch resistant than the first-generation nano. Battery life has been improved to about 24 hours, and the 1.5-inch screen is 40% brighter. Reviews say the nano is the best blend of most attributes, but the nano does not play videos or have an FM tuner, and your music purchases are limited to Apple's iTunes store. The nano is also available in 2GB (about 500 songs) and 8GB (about 2,000 songs) capacities, and it comes in five colors.
Best value.
In reviews, experts say the SanDisk Sansa line of MP3 players have great design, features and value -- the 8GB version costs about $70 less than the 8GB iPod nano. Plus, the Sansa e280 has a larger 1.8-inch screen and plays videos and photos. It has an FM tuner and voice recorder, and a microSD card slot for adding more memory. Another bonus is its user-replaceable battery -- a feature lacking in all iPod players. Though reviews still say the iPod/iTunes system is more intuitive, the SanDisk is an excellent MP3 player for the money, with a 22-hour battery life.
Most features.
Like the SanDisk Sansa e-200 series, the iRiver Clix comes very close to the iPod nano in reviews, plus it has more features. The 2.5-ounce iRiver Clix is heavier than the 1.5-ounce nano, but it has a larger video-capable 2.2-inch color LCD touchscreen that doubles for navigation -- press the screen to scroll and select. Sound and video are given uniformly high marks, and there's a long list of extras: FM tuner, voice recorder, equalizer, Macromedia Flash Player and Flash games, and an alarm clock. Reviews say the Windows-only Clix has a slick user interface and long battery life (20 hours).
Best large-capacity MP3 player (20,000 songs).
The iPod dominates the market among hard-drive players. Experts agree that the iPod system by far offers the most fully integrated music experience, a seamless marriage between the iPod hardware and the iTunes software and song library. The latest iPod plays both photos and video on its color screen, which is now much brighter. An improved search function helps find specific songs. Since Apple MP3 players use a proprietary music format called AAC, you are limited mainly to the iTunes music store for music downloads. A 30GB iPod (*est. $250) is also available.
Nearest iPod rival.
According to reviews, the Toshiba Gigabeat comes closest to iPod in terms of its intuitive interface, small size and excellent audio quality. Like the iPod, the Toshiba plays both audio and video, but the Toshiba plays more music and video formats. Also supported are music subscription services like Napster To Go, and Starz Vongo for movies. The 30GB Toshiba Gigabeat is about the same size as the iPod, with the same-size color screen. If you want a large-capacity player, but are put off by Apple's proprietary music format, the Windows-XP-only Toshiba Gigabeat is the favorite large-capacity player in reviews. A 60GB version is also available (*est. $260).
Budget MP3 player.
This simple MP3 player does not have an FM radio or play videos, and some reviews say it isn't great with audio books, but experts say the Creative Zen V is a nice-looking, easy-to-use music and photo player. It also has a voice recorder and line-in recording -- features missing on the competing iPod shuffle. Reviews say sound quality is excellent, and it runs 20 hours on its battery. The Zen V is compatible with most music formats (except Apple's AAC format) and music-subscription services. The Creative MP3 player is PC only.
Reply:Nano all the way dude.....I was thinking the same but after trying few ... ended up getting an ipod...hehehe
Reply:I think your research is correct, while the iPod might be trendy, it is however still one of the very best MP3 players in the market - specially if you consider all of the accessories available for it.
Which iPod really depends on your needs - I love my Nano, but it does not play the new Apple iPod games, does not play the iTunes Movies/TV Shows, and it "only" stores up to 8GB of music. On the other hand, it is tinny, portable, and it has no hard drive - so it is great for using it while doing heavy sport activities (no moving disc/disc header to be concerned with).
The shuffle is also a great little iPod (but even fewer storage capability 2GB) and no screen to help you select and play your music.
If you want to carry "all" of your music with you and still be able to play videos (and maybe a game or two) the regular iPod Video is the way to go, with storage capability of up to 80GB (it can even be used as on the field photo storage device in case you are running out of SD memory on your camera.)
No matter which iPod you end up choosing, the iPod family of devices is the best MP3 player out in the market right now.
Enjoy
Reply:microsoft zune all the way. my ipod just broke(only 1 month old, and apple said it was my fault. i treated that thing like it was my baby, but mysteriously it just "broke". ipods are cheap and trendy) anyways, i said im not gettin another ipod, so i picked up this zune, and it is pretty rad. you should check out some pics of it. 100% better than the ipod. sure it only has 1 model that is 30 gigs, but you can play 100 hours of video(ipod can only play 40), listen to the radio, store pics and songs. also, you can wirlessly send songs and images. also the screen is huge. it is pretty rad, and i highly suggest you look into buying one of these.

How do you get started in a career in Marketing Research?
Telesurveying? Friends of mine work with Marketing Research companies and they do telephone polls.
How do you get started in a career in Marketing Research?
Undergrad degree, then work for retailer or distributor in something like category management. After some experience try to move to a company like Nielsen or a CPG company. Or survey research for financial or health care company or one of the small market research companies doing this. Doubt being the phone surveyor is going to get you anywhere.

Is there any books on researching the stock market?
Investors, if there are books out there on the stock market, and how to do research, and what to look for, what would you suggest? Thanks
Is there any books on researching the stock market?
Yes, there are books on this (and any other topic). Try barnes and noble, or even amazon.com
If you've recently decided to begin investing, I would avoid specific stocks and invest in the spiders right now. The stock market in general (DOW, not NASDAQ or S%26amp;P) is ready for a leap in the next few months.
There are many other types of investments. Do not make the mistake of putting all of your eggs in one basket. Also, make certain you diversify even within one type of investment. If in the stock market, invest in one of each - tech, biomedical, industry, retailer, energy, etc ...

Market Research: Would you be interested in reading a book like this?
I'm thinking of writing a book about teachers. Teachers are always seen as clever people but I'm going to be sharing my anecdotes about the more... 'odd' teachers I've had. It'll be a humourous look from the eyes of a teenager. Please let me know what you think.
Market Research: Would you be interested in reading a book like this?
As long as it is fair and the ridicule is balanced.
Reply:I would buy it, I like a good light-hearted read
Reply:Sounds like fun. But just because they're odd doesn't make them not clever, just makes them interesting :P

Reply:Definitely!!!
Teenagers always love sort of mocking books of teachers, plus teachers will be able to laugh at themselves, so... Go for it!

Lu Lu has declared today "speak in third person day". Comet thinks that sounds like fun.

Why is it important to carry out marketing research?
you need to know what product / service to sell.
you need to know the lowest, highest and the average cost of a similar product / service on the market.
you need to know what your potential customers like / dislike about your product / service.
you need to know what your potential customers will pay for your product / service.
you need to know what the real costs are to produce the product / service. is the cost 20% materials and 80% labor,
or 80% materials and 20% labor.
you need to know if you are making your product from raw materials or are you assembling a product from common items bought off the shelf.
what level of skills are required for you workers.
do you have to find a location with a population that has the required skills.
there are thousands of research questions that must be answered before you start a business.
people who do not answer these questions tend to go out of business with a few years of starting up.
every question you did not bother to know will cost you thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars in unnecessary expenses, in the long run. which may put you out of business.
Why is it important to carry out marketing research?
The most important things to determine from market research is your competition, whether the market is saturated, will the market support your business.
A quick route to failure is just jumping into a business without a complete business plan (marketing research is a major factor in the business plan).

Restaurants per city? market research.?
I'm looking for some data... the number of restaurants in each of America's metropolitan areas.
For example, I've heard that there are 20,000 restaurants in NYC. Anyone know where I can get this data for other cities?
I've been searching on the Web, and I can't find these numbers.

Hi..Manhunt 2...this question regarding market research...in a sense!?
I am due to go overseas shortly for a break and am going to buy Manhunt 2 (the game banned in UK!) as a birthday gift for a friend. Where would I stand on buying a couple more games for friends in UK? %26amp; anybody interested...
Hi..Manhunt 2...this question regarding market research...in a sense!?
nah, but remember to get the game for the right region or they can't play it.
If it's for europe, you need PAL copy and not an NTSC copy and it needs to be in the right region code.
Does anyone know if PAL games have region codes?
Edit: I know that, I'm talking about disc regions, though. You have to match BOTH the region AND the visual signal to play it.
Edit edit: just checked and there is only one region for PAL so any PAL copy will work, regardless of country.
Reply:Research some british law, if it might be illegal, use a label stamper thingo to put a label over the top of the dvd, and put it in a movie case.
Then customs won't know ****.
Besides its illegal to sell in the UK, not possess.
If it doesn't get banned, buy it from Australia, here we don't ban things until they are released.
Reply:You're buying it in the states for a UK PS2? They won't be compatable, I'm afraid, without chipping your playstation.
%26lt;edit%26gt;
It's not so much a region code issue as an incompatability with different TV types.

Do companies follow market research process?
Yes. Many companies rely on market research to know everything about their products
- one ice cream brand I know conducts extensive taste tests before introducing new flavors
- one top 500 manufacturing company conducts tests on the color of their logo and where the logo should be positioned in the box of their detergent soap
- one think tank I know even conducts focus group discussions to learn what their target audience want in terms of tax research
Companies often hire market research companies to do the market study for them. The market research companies make sure that they follow accepted industry practices such as sampling, confidentiality, etc. Typically, the commissioning company watches the market research company like a hawk during the conduct of the study to minimize if not totally avoid any mistakes in the process.

GFK NOP....i work for them.. do u like being called for market research interviews?
No its sooooooo annoying
GFK NOP....i work for them.. do u like being called for market research interviews?
no its most annoying and i usually hang up
Reply:No, I always hang up. Often, what is supposed to be a market research call, turns out to be a sales pitch for a stupid product. Also, you end up on every company's sucker list if you don't hang up immedicately.
Reply:I hate it when you get rang late at night when you trying to watch a good programme on the telly or at tea time! I understand its a job and it brings in a wage for you so all i say is im sorry but im busy! No thank you! But from your point of view you doing u job and getting a wage at the end of it!!! Thats why i try not to be rude or abuse to anyone who rings up from such companies but please excuse me when i speak very quickly and hang up soon as i have finished!
Reply:Afraid not babe, I find it completely intrusive and its always ALWAYS a bad time to call me. If I wanted to answer surveys, Id do the ones that come through the post. Out of curiosity (and this is no way meant to be rude!) What are the point of these surveys? I mean, there must be better ways to do market research such as through magazines etc. Just wondering! Bxx
Reply:No and if i ever am i am very abusive. If i want something i'll ask for it!!
Reply:I don't have a problem with the market research callers cos if I'm busy I tell them and they phone back when it suits me.
I do hate the sales calls however, but always politely say no thanks - after all the caller is just earning a living so its not their fault.
Reply:hello no, i just politely tell them that i am too busy!

How do I find an agency which could do marketing research for the company?
I need to find an agency which would create a database of free forums, websites etc. to which we can submit our press releases, articles, ect.
How do I find an agency which could do marketing research for the company?
Hi,
Instead of just submitting the press release to any forums and site, you can collect forum, website links relevant to your industry. In this way many will accommodate you. Getting links from the relevant sites will yield good result. Your site will not only achieve good ranking becos the relevancy but also a good traffic over a period of time.
You can also opt for blog comment. Commenting in blogs will fetch many links as many will provide the link if the content is good.
Many will reject just like that if the same is not relevant to the site. If you are interested I can collect the same for you. I am doing SEO %26amp; Link campaign for many sites now.
You can send mail for further information.
Thanks

Is MBA in Marketing is different from Master of Marketing Research?
Which one has more scope in job market?
Is MBA in Marketing is different from Master of Marketing Research?
yes its different.
MBA in marketing actuallly touches topics in marketing research but Master of marketing research is more specialized since you will be concentrating on a specific field of interest which is very profitable in the long run bec. not many people specialize in a specific field.
Unlike in MBA, there are many people who take up MBA.
Alawys remember that the less people who take up a specialized field (granted there's a need for it) has less competition, is sought after due to shortage of skilled people in the field and hence can demand more pay.
and by the way, any product to be launched, or needs a boost, or has a competitor in mind will always pay for a market research done before they can implement their activities/commercials/product line launch. even the taste of a medicine for kids is tested bec its crucial to the sales bec bad taste is a no sale..
Reply:MBA in marketing would give u a feel of all the functions of marketing right from sales to strategising the marketing policies, this would include pricing promotion and even research about the product's segmenting targetting and positioning. in case of masters in marketing research the scope is altogether different this would mainly deal with surveys when u have a particular problem in hand and what kind of survey /research would help u solve that. there are certain sopecialised firms who go in for this talent, and scope of growth would be limited to them. in case of MBA not only ur options are vast u can easily move to market research whenever u want to
Reply:yes, the two are quite different. In the general job market, the MBA in Marketing has more scope and flexibility. With that degree you get generalized and broad education regarding business management as well as marketing. You can apply for numerouse positions because of the qualification. (from Finance Director, to Marketing Manager, etc.)
A Master of Marketing Research is more specialized and career specific. For instance that degree would be perfect to help you get a job analyzing buying trends of a particular product of a company. Also, because that degree is specialized, you would qualify to teach at a junior college (because they typically require 18 hours in the subject you are going to teach...something an MBA doesn't get you without taking the extra courses).
Good Luck!

Mystery shopping is a legitimate business but if you didn't sign up for the job before they would not send you an advance check. It may be some sort of scam. Are you sure it is a real check and not a promotional fake?
You should call the company to clarify how they got your name and what their expectations are. If they ask for any money up front (application fee, etc.) then hang up because they are not legit.

What are the issues involved in marketing research to identify and respond to customer needs.?
A marketing research is done to know the view of the people on a particular product or service.
Their acceptance of the product.
How much are they ready to spend for the product or service. Can you create demand for the product/service.
After launching the product or service how much time will it take to earn profit or investment returns.
The wider the circle of research the better the evaluation of results.

Bias in market research?
Could someone briefly explain some factors that might cause bias in a sample of customers?
Bias in market research?
The idea of market research is to query a sample of the market to help formulate or validate assumptions about the entire group. This is an imperfect science and there are many factors that can bias the results of market research. Here are four of the most common ones.
1. Poor selection criteria. The criteria you use to decide who would be included in and excluded from your sample group. If you get this wrong then data from that sample wil not be applicalbe to the larger target group. E.G. You recruit people who are experts on your product are but your target has little specialized knowledge. As a rule you usually want to exclude people who work in or have strong attitudes about marketing and advertising (unless, of course, marketing types are your target).
2. Non-random selection. Bias can creep in when your survey population is drawn from one particular segment of the population particularly if that segment is not representative of your target. E.G. You recruit subjects through a blog yet only 2% of your target read blogs.
3. Study Design. Whether it is a web survey, in-depth interview, focus group, eye-tracking study etc... the way you ask the questions or pose the problem in itself will introduce a bias. E.G. Sometimes a survey question is asked in a way that suggests a certain answer, sometimes one member of a focus group may influence the answers of the others.
4. Analysis. One of the last hurdles and perhaps the most daunting is who interprets the raw data to draw conclusions from it. If the person analyzing the data has a vested interest in the results there is a strong chance the conclusions will be biased. To avoid this use someone who is more objective - but be sure they understand your business. I have seen objective outsiders completely misinterpret answers because they were not familiar enough with what was being discussed. This is particularly true when researching a specialist target group (as opposed to general consumers).

Is online market research is spam ?
If you do not check a company before entering into a transaction, you could lose your money, time and credibility. Some widely used resources are the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) and the national fraud center (www.fraud.org) these days, you can easily find out more about a company using the internet in a few minutes. From a company's website, you can details about its ownership, how old the company really is and feedback from the company's customers.
You can find more detailed information about a company at http://tinyurl.com/gtb89
Is online market research is spam ?
The definition of spam is not just unwanted email. It is email that you did not ask to recieve, or that you have asked to not recieve yet it continues to come. Businesses are not allowed to send you email that you have not asked for, and even when you have asked for it, they are required to have an easy-to-find, working unsubscribe link or email address. And they have to comply with your request within a reasonable amount of time. Some companies allow themselves up to a week to stop the emails, but they're really supposed to get it done within a couple of days, I think.
There are several loopholes in the system, though. Firstly, if you don't read a privacy policy, you can miss that part about what the websites do with the email address you submit to them. Many websites, such as the Coke Rewards website and places like that, tell you in their privacy policy that your information will be shared between them, their partners, and third parties to send you offers 'that you may be interested in'. This opens you up to recieve anything and everything through your email. And unless you follow up on each and every one of their partners and those third parties, and read *their* privacy policies, too, you don't know whether or not those people are selling your information as well. And they usually are. And because of the original privacy policy, they can show that you indicated you were ok with recieving such emails.
Another caution is when illegitimate companies get your email address. They may appear legit, down to the unsubscribe link, but sometimes that link is only a lure. If you try to unsubscribe your email through that link, the company will pay no attention to your unsubscribe request; as far as they're concerned, you've just confirmed that your email address is valid.
Market research companies are not usually the ones involved in this sort of thing. There are some; these are the companies that are trying to get you to pay them some sort of monthly, yearly, or one-time fee to take their surveys. But legitamite market research companies never charge you any money, nor are they usually involved in spamming, in my experience.

Reply:doubtful.

I just opened my mail and received a check for 3,300.00 $$
I am confused and dont know whether to cash the check and go on a shopping spree or remain confused lol. It says in the letter ''this is to inform you that on previous survey by our affiliate Consumer Survey Specialists you indicated to be interesting in blah blah....et.c'' ''You are hereby selected to participate in a paid consumer research program in your area as a mystey shopper.''' blah blah. i am so confused and do not know what this is. then there is another form that Im supposed to fill out?
Name of store....was store clean...blah blah
Does anyone know what this is? am I supposed to be some sort of spy? lol
I just received a MArket Research Survey Check??
It's a bogus check and if you cash it, it's going to bounce and you could be charged with money laundering... NO LEGIT MARKET research company sends out that kind of money. Take it to the authorities with everything you got.
Reply:Thank you! I just received one of these in the mail today and knew I didn't ask to be part of any mystery shopper deal. Report Abuse
Reply:There are a lot of scams going on right now with checks. You need to take your check to the police department and have them check it out. If they say it is okay, then you will be blessed. But many people have fallen for this and got taken for criminal activity when they try to cash the check.

[Job Hunting] I spend a lot of time for Organizing/ Market Research etc, Do people do this too?
So I am job searching for trading company. I am business major.
Many of my friends go to Job fair and turn their resumes to hundreds of different companies, some trading company, some not. They also send their resumes to companies by emails.
I do that too, but less than 20 companies while my friends sent already 100. While my friends sending resumes, I spend a lot of time for organizing my thought for job/career, research job possibilities, salary research in several states etc. I do a lot of research. WHICH takes a lot of time...
Friends say that I shoud sending more resumes to companies instead of researching. They are NOT wrong, but I want to be able to make my career foundation nicely before getting an job offer. I want to be able to see where exactly I stand. I want to make sure what exactly I need. Instead of getting anything I am offered. So I won't be regret.
Did you spend lots of time for searching? Or did you just send your resumes to tons of companies?
[Job Hunting] I spend a lot of time for Organizing/ Market Research etc, Do people do this too?
103 resumes, 26 interviews, 2 offers.
One job that I love.
Reply:I spent more time researching. On average I am sending out about 10 resumes a week, but I have made sure that I have researched the companies, and changed my cover letter to use their keywords. The point is that you need to target your cover letter and resume to each different job.
I find I do get more interviews when I have targeted my cover letter and resume. In fact I just had an interview this morning, not 3 hours ago. I got it because I targeted my resume and letter to their requirements. I have already been invited back for a second interview next week. This job is one that I really want.
If your friends go out and hand out the exact same resume to 100 different companies, the resumes get dumped in the trash because they are just "cookie cutter" resumes, they all look the same. They have not been targeted to each different company and they do not show the exact requirements that the company is asking for.
